Quick Guide: A History of Tea in Europe

Dutch and Portuguese traders brought tea into Europe in 1610 and, by the 1630s, Holland was exporting it to neighboring countries. It was an expensive luxury, so French aristocrats sipped their China tea in the vast high-ceilinged reception rooms of their grand palaces, knowing that their king, Louis XIV, drank it regularly for his gout and heart problems.
