At one point in Cover, one of two recent titles by leading book designer Peter Mendelsund reviewed here alongside Paula Rabinowitz’s American Pulp, its author answers the question taxonomically. A book cover is whatever it does; it’s a composite object with multiple functions. The book, in other words, is a social entity.
