A new disease is rapidly spreading around the world, and we're totally unprepared — again

A new disease can appear from what seems to be nowhere. Zika hadn't appeared in the Americas until 2014, but it's now spread through South and Central America and into Mexico. As of December 31, it's also spread to the US, with a locally acquired infection reported in Puerto Rico.
