Kabuki is Japanese stylized theater, known for its elaborate drama, makeup and costumes. The performances are intended to entertain audiences with dramatic and exciting stories, feats of superhuman strength, and spectacular stage effects. The plays performed today are still based mainly on their Edo and Genroku period ancestors, but some troupes and actors attempt to jazz up their performances for modern audiences; some have even adapted plays from the Western canon.
