Japan’s first taste of the West and foreign ideas came with the arrival of the Nanban during the Azuchi-Momoyama Era (1568 ~ 1603) in the 16th century. But with the threat of Christian ideas, Japan shut its doors to outsiders once more, until the dawn of the Meiji Era (1868 ~ 1912), that is.
